Bernard J. Picchi

Bernard J. Picchi (Bernie) is a 1967 graduate of Serra. He is also a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Bernie began his career at Mellon Bank then joined the Equity Research Department of Salomon Brothers in New York, where he eventually became Managing Director. In July 1994, he joined Lehman Brothers as head of energy research and also served as U.S director of
research at Lehman Brothers.

In 1999, Bernie joined Federated Investors as portfolio manager and director of research where he managed the Capital Appreciation Fund. During his tenure, fund assets grew from $500 million to $1.5 billion. In January 2002, Business Week named his fund one of the 50 best funds in the United States, and Morningstar awarded the fund a 5-star rating.

Bernie worked as a research consultant in energy to several middle-market broker/dealers and investment advisory firms in New York until he joined Palisade Capital Management as portfolio manager in the firm’s Wealth Management Group.

Bernie has been a frequent commentator on the securities and energy industries. His TV appearances have included Wall Street Week, the Today Show, Nightline, The MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour, The Nightly Business Report, CNBC, BBC, and Bloomberg. He has lectured on energy policy topics at MIT, Columbia, Georgetown, the University of Colorado, and the University of Calgary. He has been the keynote speaker at the NY Society of Security Analysts’ annual energy conference for several years.

Bernie and his wife Nancy, an archivist and Internet trainer, reside in New York City. They are the parents of twin daughters. He chairs the Collections Committee of the Georgetown University Library, and is a former Regent of Georgetown. He is a past president and/or board member of numerous trade associations including the Oil Analysts Group of New York. He serves on the board of Vancouver-based Mercer International (MERC), the largest publicly traded producer of northern bleached softwood kraft (pulp) in the world.

Bernie is committed to helping Serra secure her financial future by working with our Investment Committee to insure the maintenance and growth of our endowment and operating funds. He realizes and appreciates the need to develop funds to support tuition assistance and scholarships for our students as well as capital improvements. His belief in the value of a Serra education is the driving force behind his efforts.
