This Land is Home to Me – this is the title of the 1975 pastoral letter signed by twenty-five bishops in the Appalachia region. The letter explains the sad history of the Appalachian communities: The cries come now from Appalachia, but they are echoed across the land, across the earth in the suffering of too many people. Together these many sufferings form a single cry. The Living God hears this cry…” The cry of the poor has not been silenced in the 21 years since this letter was written. For the past six years, Serra students have traveled to an Appalachian Mission in Clearfield County called Young People Who Care. During the week, the teens are assigned to groups and sent to job sites where they answer God’s call to serve.
After the trip Students wrote reflections on their experiences.
