SERRA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

COMMENCEMENT ACTIVITIES AND SENIOR INFORMATION AND PROCEDURES 

 

1.         JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM     Friday, May 5, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. at Ferrante’s Lakeview Inn, Rt. 30,                                                             Greensburg.

Students will be advised of specific procedures to be followed through the School Prom Committee.  The school policy regulating school activities will be in place and followed throughout the evening.  No students will be permitted to attend the Prom without a ticket purchased from the school.  If there is any evidence of alcohol use or intoxication among students attending the prom, the students will be detained and the police and parents will be notified immediately; breathalyzers may be used.  All students and their guests must abide by the Prom Regulations, which will be distributed to students along with parent permission forms.  Parents of both students and student guests will sign these permission forms. The Prom will conclude promptly at 10:30 p.m.

 

2.         SENIOR BACCALAUREATE MASS    Sunday, May 21, 2017 6:00 p.m. at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church                                                                                        1640 Fawcett Avenue White Oak, PA 15131

This year we are transitioning from the Communion Breakfast to a traditional Baccalaureate Mass. All seniors and their families are encouraged to attend. All graduation awards will be given after the Baccalaureate Mass.  This is a religious activity and those attending are asked to comply with these expectations therefore seniors and their guests are asked to dress formally. Parents and guests may take photographs during the Awards Presentation.

           

3.         SENIOR FINAL EXAMINATIONS              May 17 – 23, 2017                  Dismissal as noted

Exams for seniors will include two testing periods on each day.  Each of the testing periods will be two periods long (1 hour and 20 minutes).  Seniors are to report to the cafeteria if they arrive before the scheduled exam.  Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each exam period.  Seniors requesting to take an exam other than their scheduled period must present a doctor’s excuse. Following the last final students should completely clean out their lockers.

Seniors need only be present for their scheduled exams.  Seniors will not be permitted to take an exam after Tuesday, May 23, 2017.        

 

4.        

A.        GRADUATION PRACTICE    

On Friday, May 26, 2017 seniors are expected to arrive at Serra at 9:30 a.m., reporting immediately to the chapel. Students should enter through the side chapel door closest to the parking lot. Once we confirm that lockers were cleaned, Chromebooks/chargers and books were returned, students will receive their Caps/Gowns.  IMPORTANT:  No senior will receive his/her cap and gown unless tuition payments are up-to-date, all fees, past due books, and activities costs (band fees, cafeteria charges, etc.) are current.  Questions in this regard should be directed to Ms. McBarron in the Finance Office (412-751-2020 ex. 109).

  

B.     SENIOR COMMENCEMENT ACTIVITIES Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at Saint Paul Cathedral Seniors are expected to assemble in the hall directly below the Cathedral no later than 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30th. At that time, students will be given final instructions and the opportunity to adjust dress and makeup for photographs.  Parents are not to be present with the seniors at this time.  Opportunity for photographs will be provided during and after the commencement ceremony.

 

            C.  PARKING AT SAINT PAUL CATHEDRAL

On the day of graduation, parents and guests of the graduates may park their vehicles in the lots adjacent to the   Cathedral and at Oakland Catholic High School parking lot. 

 

D.  SEATING AT THE CATHEDRAL

       Seating is on a first come first served basis.  A section is reserved for the graduates and faculty.  We ask your cooperation in allowing parents to sit as close to the graduates as possible.

 

E.   GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS              

Seniors who ordered graduation announcements through Jostens have already received them. A limited quantity of graduation announcements is available in the Main Office at the cost of $2.50 each.

 

F.    STUDENT DRESS AT GRADUATION            

On the day of graduation, male students should wear black (or dark) trousers, a white (or light colored) dress shirt, and tie. Female students should wear a shirt (or light colored) blouse, and a dark skirt or a dress.  As this is a religious function, guests of the graduates should dress appropriately.

 

G.    PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS                     

Given the solemnity of this occasion, and especially considering the fact that graduation will be taking place in the Cathedral, guests will not be permitted in the front aisles to take photographs or videos.  A School Photographer will be available to videotape the Liturgy and Graduation Ceremony.  If you are interested in obtaining a copy of the tape an order form will be in your child’s graduation packet. Photographs may be taken outside of the Cathedral and inside during the ceremony from your pews.  No one will be permitted to enter the Sanctuary or front aisle during the services.  Your complete cooperation is asked in order to preserve the solemnity of the moment and assist in keeping distractions to a minimum.

 

H.    FOLLOWING THE COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY                   

Graduates will return to the Cathedral Hall as a group immediately following the ceremony.  At that time, graduates will receive final directions and actual diplomas.  After final announcements, graduates will be dismissed to join their families.  It is expected that the Commencement Ceremony will last approximately two hours.

 

I.    GRADUATION FEE                  

Prior to final exams, seniors are required to pay the graduation fee of $125.  This fee must be delivered to the Finance Office at the school.  The deadline to submit this fee is May 12th.   Parents wishing to mail the graduation fee may send it to the attention of Ms. McBarron in the Finance Office.  This fee pays for caps and gowns, graduation expenses, the choir, use of the Cathedral, and awards distributed at Graduation and the Baccalaureate Mass.

 

J.    OUTSTANDING TUITION AND PAYMENT OF SCHOOL FEES                

A review of all Tuition and Finance Accounts is currently underway.  According to Diocesan and School Policy, no student will be permitted to attend the Senior Prom or Graduation unless all accounts are rectified; this includes past-due fees (Band, Library, etc.).  THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTION TO THIS POLICY.  No personal checks will be accepted after May 12th.  After that date, payments must be by certified bank check, cashier’s check, or cash.
