This week Serra Catholic is proud to feature Ms. Stephanie Wharrey, one of our teachers in the English and Foreign Language Department.

I graduated from North Allegheny Senior High School in 2008. I then studied Secondary Education at California University of Pennsylvania.  In 2012, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a K-12 French Certification. To graduate Honors, I completed a thesis titled “Foreign Language Education: An Indispensable Learning Experience for All Students.” In this thesis, I explore the benefits of second language learning. During my time at California University of Pennsylvania, I had the opportunity to travel to France, Italy, and Greece. I intend on beginning my Master’s Degree studies in the near future.

After graduation from California University of Pennsylvania, I received the wonderful opportunity to begin my teaching career at Serra Catholic High School. I began with a part-time position teaching French 1, 2, and 3. During my first year of teaching, I received my 7-12 English Certification. I received a full-time position for the 2013-2014 school year teaching French 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as American and British Literature.

Many times, people ask why students are required to take languages. I believe that everyone can benefit from Foreign Language study. In my thesis, I researched the academic, cognitive, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and communicative benefits of Foreign Language study. Foreign Language study also provides the students with opportunities to make connections with others, to communicate in another language, and to learn about other cultures. In order to prepare our students for our increasingly global society, Foreign Language study is fundamental.

In addition to my interests in the French language and culture, my interests include reading, travelling, and being outside. I also enjoy watching sports, especially football and hockey. During the summer, I enjoy camping and boating.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to teach at Serra Catholic High School.
