This week, Serra Catholic is proud to feature Mrs. Karen Kolenik, a teacher in our Social Studies department.  In addition, Mrs. Kolenik moderates our popular Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club, and she is also our assistant volleyball coach.  Below you may find her autobiography:

I grew up in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, attending Catholic school for 12 years and am a graduate of Bishop McCort High School, ’83. After attending IUP and receiving a degree in Social Science Education, I have taught in four Catholic schools in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown and the Diocese of Pittsburgh. I am the assistant volleyball coach and moderator of Future Business Leaders of America. I also sponsor a trip to Europe each summer for our students.

I came to Serra in 2008 and felt like I came “home.” Why teach at a Catholic school and at Serra Catholic? Because we give our students the best opportunity to become what God wants them to become. We design our lessons and live our lives as Christ-centered. While academics are important, what completes them as young people of God is their faith. This combination allows me to be more successful than I could ever be at a public school. Even for those students who are not Catholic, we can emulate Jesus’ teachings. We can show kindness to all students, those who do everything we ask of them as well as those who struggle to succeed. We can make them all feel that our classrooms are a warm and welcoming place.

It was for these reasons that my husband and I chose to send our two daughters to Serra, after considering four different high schools. They are now a freshman and a junior at Serra and we are blessed to see the opportunities that Serra has given them.
