For our third week of Faculty Highlights, we are highlighting Ms. Cara DeSalvo, Serra Catholic's Athletic Trainer and Biology Instructor.  Below is an excerpt from her autobiography:

I came to Serra Catholic in 2003 because I thought it was the lesser of two evils! I was raised Catholic and have probably missed Mass five times in my life, but I went to public school from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Although I played on some highly successful high school softball teams, Bishop Carroll in Ebensburg, PA routinely DEMOLISHED us in basketball, so I grew up to be leary of how private schools were very good at some sports! Then, after spending a year working as an athletic trainer in Maryland, UPMC called me and offered me a job back in Pittsburgh and said they would basically pay for grad school. I decided it was a good move and was super excited until they told me the two options I had for schools at which to work: Serra Catholic or Greensburg Central Catholic. Really!?!?!?!

I really knew little about either school, but since I wanted to move back into the South Side with my old roommates, I decided to be an Eagle since the drive to Serra was more attractive and I had heard from a friend of a friend that used to be a guidance counselor for the AIU, that Serra was nice in the 1980's.....

Who would've known it choosing Serra would probably rank up there with the best decisions I have made in my life. After a few years of "just" being involved in Serra athletics, in 2005, I started my graduate degree in education, ended up student teaching at Serra, and then became part time science faculty in 2008. This is my first full time teaching year, but over the last 11 years as athletic trainer and 5+ years in the classroom, I have had countless opportunities, made tremendous amounts of memories, and have basically gained another family, who has not only embraced me, but also took my real family and friends under their wings.

In my "spare time," I love doing almost anything outdoors and especially enjoy exercising/playing sports, gardening, and cheering on the Pirates! I am getting married in the spring and live in Jefferson Hills.
