Serra Softball Beats Sewickley Panthers

posted Apr 28, 2016, 9:10 AM by Sandra Barbieri
Your Serra Catholic Eagles Softball Team faced off against last year's Section 5-A champion the Sewickley Panthers yesterday afternoon.  After going down 1-0 in the first inning Sam Andrekanic hit a triple scoring Simone Jahn and knotting things up at 1-1.  The score remained the same until Sewickley scored in the fourth making it 2-1.  However, in the bottom of the fourth Elizabeth Quattrone hit a single scoring Maria Lamonde and bringing the score to 2-2.  In the top of the fifth the Panthers went up one last time making the score 3-2, but in the bottom of the fifth your Eagles responded one more time when Maria Lamonde hit a single scoring Peyton Jaworski.  With the score tied at 3-3 Sam Andrekanic and the Eagles defense shut down the Panthers for the rest of the game.  With no one on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Lauren Kolenik hit a double to right field, bringing Maria Lamonde to the plate.  With a one-two count Lamonde turned on a pitch, smacking it down the left field line and scoring Kolenik from second.  Lamonde's walk off double secured the Eagles' seventh victory in section play and brought their overall record to 11-0.

The Eagles are now one section victory away from sowing up their first section championship since 2009.

The Eagles could achieve that this afternoon when they face off at home against the Cornell Raiders.  This afternoon is also senior recognition, so come on out and show your support for Sam, Gia, Peyton and Maria. Game time is 4:00pm.  Go Eagles!
