If you're thinking of coming to Serra, I would tell you we have a wonderful theater program that is small but mighty. We've had a lot of success over the last 4 years. We won a state championship in the marching band. We won second place this year the state championship. We won 3 section titles. We started getting involved in the Gene Kelly's for music. The Gene Kelly Awards are for Pittsburgh's musical theater. It's a competition amongst all the schools. They're basically the Tony Awards for high school kids. I think we develop a really amazing community together. Being nominated for the semi-finalist through the Gene Kelly program, I got to go down to Pittsburgh and meet a lot of other people who are involved with the musical programs, a lot of really talented kids, and I just had a great experience with them. At Serra, we participate in Gene Kelly's against some of the biggest public schools in the area. Even though they have a cast of 60 kids where they have a larger talent pool, and we have a cast of 20 kids with a smaller talent pool, we are still at the level where we're able to compete with them and still be nominated. Last year with our first win, its "Hey, Serra is a school that is a contender now." The music program is basically a family. Theater people are the most understanding and welcoming amongst all people as I've seen throughout my time as a performer. "You'll do stuff together and are always in a group and hanging out and working on different songs and lines and stuff so I feel like we definitely have that going for us. If you meet a theater kid, they are going to love and accept you more than anyone in the entire world.
