Saint Francis, known for his humility, generosity, and radical commitment to service, reminds us that true richness is found in giving freely of ourselves for the good of others. His life’s message — “It is in giving that we receive” — is at the heart of our mission and at the heart of this special day.

Our Day of Giving is a 24-hour opportunity for alumni, families, and the entire Serra Catholic community to come together and support the General Fund, which allows us to meet the school’s greatest and most immediate needs. Whether it’s tuition assistance, academic resources, capital improvements, or student life, your gift provides flexible support where it’s needed most.

A Decade of Development

The last ten years have brought about unprecedented levels of development at Serra Catholic. These advancements range from constant updates with educational technology, curriculum offerings, new opportunities for sacramental and liturgical practices, and the many enhancements to our building and grounds. Please join us in a prayer of thanksgiving for the many people who have to thank: generosity of donors, a dedicated faculty, staff, and administration.

2014

When massive funding was secured to build a new roadway connecting Route 48 to Marshall Drive, it greatly increased the safe commute for about half of our students who enter our campus from that direction. This also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of our location. The digital sign allows us to advertise current events, school news, and other pertinent information on a daily basis. Additionally, several renovations were made in our gymnasium/auditorium. New LED fixtures were installed that significantly brightened the gym; furthermore, the stage was outfitted with new front and back curtains.

TOTAL COST: $80,000

2015

Some of the hottest and coolest projects (literally) ever implemented occurred in 2015 and 2016. Taking care of the original HVAC infrastructure, the original boiler from 1961 was replaced. The new boiler is only one-fifth of the size of the original and is 35% more efficient - resulting in a significant decrease in our consumption of natural gas (and our winter utility expenses)!

2016

To alleviate the often oppressive and overbearing high temperatures in our classrooms during the first and last months of the school year, 3-ton ductless air conditioning units were installed in each room. The units are incredibly efficient and effective. At a cost of less than 10 cents per hour/per unit, each classroom’s temperature can easily be reduced from stifling heat to perfect comfort in a matter of minutes.

TOTAL COST: $110,000

Furthermore, to accommodate the increase in enrollment and the need for additional faculty, two new classrooms were inside the existing library.

Most importantly, on September 23, 2016 (the first anniversary of the Canonization of Saint Junipero Serra), we broke ground on the largest capital improvement project in our history: the creation of the San Damiano Chapel - capable of seating for over 100 people.

2017

Advancements to our school this year featured a great deal of enhancements, many of which would not be immediately recognized but critically important to our operation. The obvious changes featured the total renovation of our upstairs restrooms, replacing the second floor ceiling, installing digital clocks in every hallway and classroom, and renovating the front patio. While these were all valuable enhancements, there were critical developments “behind the scenes.” New fiber optic cable and modems were installed throughout the building to provide the highest internet speed possible throughout the school. This also enabled us to have security cameras covering all common areas inside the building and around the campus.

TOTAL COST: $210,000

Most speciality, recognizing our heritage of a Franciscan school in the tradition of Saint Junipero Serra, the San Damiano was officially opened with a blessing and inaugural mass by Bishop David Zubik.

2018

Completing our long list of technology enhancements, every classroom has a digital board that can connect wirelessly to each instructor’s laptop. Digital notes can be automatically saved to each student’s Google Classroom account, as well as the powerpoint presentations created by each instructor. An A/V lab was also completed, affording students the ability to record class projects with high-tech equipment and even broadcast morning announcements. Finally, our lockers that were nearly 40 years old were replaced. Many of the older red and yellow lockers were not working properly; they were all replaced with new lockers in the more contemporary Cardinal Red, making for a great aesthetic enhancement and eliminating operational issues.

2019

2020

A few months into the 2020 calendar year, the largest donations to our tuition assistance fund were made. We were beyond blessed to have received these funds as we were all about to embark on an unprecedented time with the worldwide pandemic that was soon about to change our world. Not knowing the long-term impact the pandemic might create, we held off on any plans for capital improvements for the year.

2021

As we made our way through the pandemic and the various restrictions associated with it, we slowly but surely started to resume “normal” operations and attended to some items in our gymnasium that were in need of enhancement. All six of the original basketball hoops were replaced with retractable units and are now controlled by one small touch-screen panel. Additionally, the scoreboards on both sides of the gym were replaced. Finally, as a fitting tribute to Serra’s longtime teacher, girls basketball coach, and athletic director of 37 years, the gym was renamed “William J. Cleary Court.” His name is featured on the wall and his signature is displayed on the newly refinished gym floor.

2022

Thanks to massive grant opportunities and continued support from alumni and other benefactors, a multitude of additional enhancements were implemented. While the individual items are too long to list, they are highlighted with new technology for all teachers so they can broadcast and record daily lessons, total refurbishment of every classroom ventilator to ensure proper heating and fresh air exchange with air purification devices, a massively expanded practice field, and a fleet of new buses and school vans.

2023

We learned in the middle of the prior sports season that our scoreboard was “on its last legs” and could not be guaranteed to last another year. A new scoreboard was erected in the summer; the style reflects the same features as the scoreboards in the gym. The music program, which now boasts of their first-place finish in the state finals in 2022, received major funding that allowed us to double the space of their classroom and provide a plethora of new instruments. Our chemistry lab has also received a total renovation from top to bottom. We were unable to use the lab during the pandemic due to spacing restrictions and the fact that each table was mounted to the floor. This is the last of our three science labs to receive a complete overhaul since 2010.
