We have this Franciscan charism at Serra Catholic And the word charism means gift. It's the gift that Saint Francis gives us in our education style. Everyone loves Fancis. He is the one, with Christ, that says, come to me and I love you. No matter who you are. The fundamental gift that Francis gave to the church is the gift of community. I'm very embarrassed by my time as a student. And that for two reasons: One, I was a terrible student I was a lousy student. I was also a very disgruntled student. As a teacher, I would never put up with me as a student. I did not want to come to Serra Catholic High School. I came kicking and screaming every day, and, on my last day of school, I literally turned to the school and said, I will never walk through these doors again. And here I am walking through these doors again every day of my life. We just had an experience last week where we found out that one of the pillars of the faculty in my time at Serra died. The noble Miss Roberta Sinclair, who was one of the greatest teachers of all time. Some of my friends and I from our school days were talking about her, and one of them said, Tim, I can't believe that you hated Serra so much when you were a student. We had the greatest faculty that ever stepped into a school, and I had to respond with, You know what? You are right. I was the jerk, and the school was the place that I needed to be. So, but that, I think, is a lesson, too. Because if you are here against your will, you can still be formed by the community of Serra Catholic.
